Edinburgh, Scotland

Scotland’s capital of Edinburgh is one of the most breathtaking cities in all of Europe. This accolade is mostly attributed to Nature, because city is located amidst a jumble of valleys and hills. The 18th and 19th centuries, however, saw the enhancement of these surroundings by architecture of the Georgian and Victorian style.

The resulting effect today is surreal drama. There are several spots where Edinburgh looks more like the backdrop of a theatre stage than it does a city. The view from the city’s Calton Hill, which is just across the Forth and Fife rivers, could be mistaken as a city from ancient Rome.

Named after the ancient King Edwin of Northumbria, Edinburgh since the 12th century has been a Royal Burgh. It has been recognized as Scotland’s capital city since the 15th century.

Edinburgh's dramatic splendour has been its biggest selling point and has put this Scottish city on the map as one of the world’s most famous capitals. And yet, its beauty is not the only thing that lends it its distinct ambience. There is a very pleasant melding of both the past and the present, and its charm abounds, unlike in other cities of the world.
